What about what I want? I want girls. You want me to suddenly like men because you’re turning into one?

– Phoebe and Bianca Sitting in a Tree by Kevin Yang

In the early spring, CJ McGillivray had the pleasure of working on a dramatic short film with emerging director Kevin Yang in association with aFocus Entertainment and Motion Picture Arts at Capilano University. Phoebe and Bianca Sitting in a Tree is a heartfelt dramatic comedy about two young women who fall madly in love but are ultimately ripped apart over their differences in sexual identity. CJ was both honoured and challenged in the role of Bianca alongside her girlfriend Phoebe as portrayed by local actor Jessica Lee. Both women had the opportunity to explore the moral ambiguity of love and rejection over issues of sexual identity. The story of Phoebe and Bianca represents a deeply physical sensation of loss for both leading characters. The short film premiered at the Capilano University Queer Film Festival on Thursday, April 3rd, 2014. The director was later honoured with an Award of Excellence at the Canada International Film Festival.
